How to use the AAMC CARS Diagnostic Tool

Nearly 180 official CARS questions in one tool. For most Retakers, this is where a real CARS turnaround starts.

What it is

The AAMC CARS Diagnostic Tool is a large bank of official CARS passages and questions (Pillar's plan works through roughly 179 questions of it) with diagnostic feedback on the reasoning skills involved.

CARS is the section where official material matters most, because no third party fully replicates how AAMC answer choices are argued. This tool is the deepest pool of that material outside the full lengths.

How a Retaker gets the most from it

Work in timed passage sets, then review by argument, not by vibe. For every miss, write down the exact sentence-level evidence for the credited answer and the exact move that made your choice wrong (too broad, too strong, out of scope, half right).

Track your misses by pattern across weeks. CARS improvement on a retake comes from neutralizing two or three recurring wrong-answer habits, not from reading faster.

Keep a steady cadence. A few passages several times a week beats a marathon Saturday, because CARS is a skill you maintain like conditioning.

Where it lands in a retake plan

Pillar Prep's plan breaks the CARS Diagnostic Tool into 25-question blocks spread across the plan, so official CARS practice stays constant from early prep to test week. CARS strategy lessons (Critically Engaged Reading) are scheduled alongside the early blocks.

Pillar Prep's study plans are built around official AAMC material because it is the gold standard for MCAT practice.
